Nikken Sekkei's 22.7 m² 'hatmachida' Community Hub in Machida

Japanese architecture firm Nikken Sekkei has completed 'hatmachida', a compact 22.7 m² community center located at a street corner near Machida Station in Tokyo, Japan. The project, designed in collaboration with Suzuki Design & Build, was completed in 2025 and photographed by Shota Hiyoshi. Curated by Miwa Negoro, the space functions as a café, mixed-use, and office architecture, aiming to catalyze public activity in the surrounding urban district. The design deliberately positions a small but active presence within the urban fabric to generate a multiplier effect on neighboring areas. The architecture is intended to evolve through sustained use over time, challenging conventional urban renewal approaches and proposing an alternative model for future city planning.
