award · 2026-04-24

Nikita Gale, an artist from Los Angeles, has been honored with the 2024 Bucksbaum Award from the Whitney Museum, which includes a $100,000 prize and a dedicated project at the museum. She was chosen from 71 artists and collectives participating in the ongoing Whitney Biennial: Even Better Than the Real Thing. Gale’s installation, TEMPO RUBATO (STOLEN TIME), 2023–24, features a modified piano that silently performs pop music, accompanied by flickering artificial lights that expose its mechanical components. Her previous works include IN A DREAM YOU CLIMB THE STAIRS, 2022, and DRRRUMMERRRRRR, 2019. The Bucksbaum jury comprised Whitney director Scott Rothkopf and other notable figures.
