Nieves González Blends Baroque and Contemporary in Portraits of Modern Women

Spanish painter Nieves González, trained in seventeenth-century techniques, recontextualizes Baroque portraiture to celebrate contemporary women. Her work employs tenebrism and dynamic composition to create luminous, textured depictions. A notable commission from British pop star Lily Allen resulted in the album cover for 'West End Girl,' released October 2025. González's latest series, 'The Body Sustained,' recently exhibited at SC Gallery in Bilbao, with a solo show scheduled for June at Richard Heller in Los Angeles. The artist holds a bachelor's and master's in Fine Arts from Seville, where she studied Zurbarán, Ribera, and Velázquez at the Museum of Fine Arts. Her practice merges classical foundations with contemporary influences, including flamenco culture.
