Nicola Verlato's Pasolini Mural Unveiled in Torpignattara, Rome

artist · 2026-05-05

Nicola Verlato, known for his hyperrealist, Mannerist-inspired paintings produced in his Los Angeles studio, has created a large-scale mural in Rome's Torpignattara district, a departure from his usual gallery work. The mural, measuring approximately 10 meters high and executed in metallic black and white, is based on a previous canvas work. It depicts Pier Paolo Pasolini, the Italian poet and filmmaker, in a complex trompe-l'œil composition that blends cinema, theater, poetry, painting, sculpture, and architecture. The scene shows Pasolini sinking into an infernal ground reminiscent of his film Salò, with his killer restrained by a carabiniere above, and below, a sculptural group of Pasolini as a child with his mother, alongside Petrarch and Ezra Pound. The mural was commissioned by M.U.Ro (Museo di Urban Art di Roma), an association led by David Vecchiato that has produced numerous artist walls in the Quadraro area. This is Verlato's first street art project, as he has no background in writing or mural painting.
