Nicola Verlato's Mausoleum for Pasolini at Ostia
Artist Nicola Verlato (Verona, 1965) has conceived an ambitious architectural project: a mausoleum for Pier Paolo Pasolini at the idroscalo di Ostia, on the site of the writer's murder. The project, which also includes a theater, cinema, and museum, is presented in the exhibition 'Hostia. Pier Paolo Pasolini alle Terme di Diocleziano' in Rome, curated by Lorenzo Canova and organized by MetaMorfosi and the Museo Nazionale Romano – Terme di Diocleziano, directed by Stéphane Verger. The exhibition features large-scale canvases, busts, an eleven-meter frieze, and a sculpture of Pasolini suspended between fall and ascent. Verlato envisions an annual festival dedicated to Pasolini at the site. The project began in 2015 with a mural in Torpignattara and continued with another mural in Ostia and a recent show at Mart in Rovereto. The area is protected by Lipu as a bird nesting site, making realization uncertain. The exhibition includes elements of the mausoleum: lunettes, statues, and a ten-meter-diameter frieze, displayed in the 20-meter-high halls of the Baths of Diocletian.
