Nico Vascellari's Horse Power Opens Rome's VideoArt Week

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

Nico Vascellari's latest video work, Horse Power, premiered tonight at the Maxxi in Rome as part of the city's VideoArt Week. Produced for the 2019 Lyon Biennale in collaboration with the Palais de Tokyo's curatorial team, the piece documents a three-day, three-night experiment in which nine stuntmen drive cars with their hoods removed and replaced by 1:1 scale wax sculptures of animals. Each driver follows a unique manual based on the behavior of the animal that serves as the car brand's logo—including Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Alfa Romeo. The VideoArt Week, curated by Damiana Leoni and Lorena Stamo, runs from today through November 27, featuring screenings and talks with artists, curators, and critics.
