Nico Vascellari and Banks Violette Launch Codalunga with Death Metal-Inspired Show

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Nico Vascellari opens the season of his multidisciplinary space Codalunga in Vittorio Veneto on November 26 with an invitation to New York-based artist Banks Violette to create a project for the external windows. The exhibition also features graphic interventions that dialogue with a collection of drawings, letters, and documents of American rock singer GG Allin. A fanzine published by Heinzfeller Nileisist of New York accompanies the show, combining works by Vascellari, Violette, and Allin with texts by Alissa Bennet and Vascellari. Banks Violette, born in 1973 in the US, is known for exploring ritual murders, teenage suicide, and death metal music, blending youth culture with minimal forms. His 2005 Whitney Museum exhibition featured a life-size replica of a church on a black stage, burned and inspired by a Death Metal album cover, with ambient sound by Thorns Ldt. The work referenced a series of arson cases in Norway by Death Metal fans, culminating in the 1993 murder of Mayhem guitarist Øystein Aarseth by Burzum's Varg Vikernes. Violette's work has also been shown at the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Genève, MoMA, the Guggenheim, and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. The Vittorio Veneto program includes a live performance by Ron Morelli and Low Jack from Paris, and a vertical collaboration between Ghedalia Tazartes (Paris) and Nico Vascellari for the performance "Bus De La Lum," which also stops at Museion on November 24 as part of Bolzano's Long Night of Museums.
