Nick Miller's 'Truckscapes' Exhibition at New York Studio School Challenges Contemporary Art Norms

Nick Miller, a 46-year-old English artist residing in rural Ireland, presented his exhibition 'Truckscapes' at the New York Studio School from September 18 to October 25, 2008. The show featured oil on linen landscapes painted from a mobile studio in his truck, a method that resolves the challenges of plein air painting in Northern Europe's unpredictable weather. Works like 'From Cogan’s shed' (2004) depict meticulous, nearly uninhabited scenes, while 'Hazel catkins' (2006) is a large drawing with close-up details reminiscent of Romantic successors to Constable. Miller incorporates representations of his truck's frame at the margins of paintings, such as in 'Ben Bulben craggs with birds' (2008) and 'To Kilronan' (2005), creating a contemporary context for traditional-seeming landscapes. 'Interior truck-view, Lough Key' (2006) reveals his process by showing a small landscape within a painting of the truck's interior, including brushes and paints. This approach parallels Matisse's self-referential works from Nice in the 1920s and 30s, inviting viewers into the artistic process. The exhibition, curated by David Cohen, Editor and Publisher of artcritical.com, was held at 8 West 8th Street in New York City, near Chelsea, and offered an aesthetic contrast to dominant art fashion, demanding close contemplation unlike typical Chelsea art.
