Nicholas Pope's 'Sins and Virtues' exhibition at The Sunday Painter explores morality through mixed-media works

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Nicholas Pope's art show, 'Sins and Virtues,' was held at The Sunday Painter in London from September 15 to November 24, 2018. The exhibition included a mix of works on paper and sizable oil bar pieces. It showcased 15 drawings, including a blue amoeba with bright orange lightning and architectural designs like 'Seven Lanterns of Sin Southbo' and 'Seven Towers of Virtue Northbo,' set against a motorway backdrop from 1998. A map of Great Britain with an orange ring road around London illustrated the motorway system as a key theme. Now at age seventy, Pope previously represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1980 and returned in the '90s with faith-themed pieces. The show also featured 14 oil bar works and glass vessels related to the seven deadly sins and virtues. A striking sculpture, 'Sofa of the Deadly Sins and Coffee Table of Virtue,' included organic forms and tentacles, reflecting deep themes. This exhibition marked his return to The Sunday Painter after a break due to health issues, focusing on sin and virtue in a unique way. The review appeared in the January & February 2019 issue of ArtReview.
