Niamh O'Malley's 'holds' at Artopia Gallery, Milan
Irish artist Niamh O'Malley (Co Mayo, 1975) presents 'holds', a solo exhibition at Artopia Gallery in Milan, running until May 2025. The show features new sculptures in glass, steel, and wood, alongside a video and works from 2013 to 2023. O'Malley, who represented Ireland at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, designed the project to engage with the gallery's elliptical openings and revelations within a traditional Milanese 'casa di ringhiera'. The exhibition includes thin folded steel sheets at the entrance, three glass compositions framed in metal on the main wall echoing courtyard windows, and three suspended ash wood vertical elements with steel finishes. Upstairs, smaller sculptures encourage contemplation, while the silent dual-channel video 'Garden' (2013), shot in a Dublin garden, reflects on enclosed yet protected space. The show is supported by Culture Ireland, with a text by Giovanna Manzotti.
