NFTs and AI Reshape the Music Industry

The music industry is undergoing a revolution driven by NFTs and AI. In February, DJ 3LAU earned $11.6 million in 24 hours selling NFTs, while Grimes made $5.8 million in 20 minutes. Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park raised about $11,000, and rapper Ibn Inglor collected $92,000 by selling copyright shares of his upcoming album. Steve Aoki debuted his Dream Catcher collection, created with 3D illustrator Antoni Tudisco, featuring eleven unique digital artworks. Major labels are experimenting: the Grammys will sell NFTs, Warner Music Group partnered with Genies for digital avatars, and Universal Music Group launched a Bored Ape Yacht Club band. NFTs serve as digital certificates of ownership for music-related assets, from albums to concert tickets, enabling direct monetization via blockchain. Grammy-winning producer André Anjos released individual layers of his track Circular as NFTs, allowing owners to remix collaboratively. AI is being used to analyze melodies and listener data to generate targeted music. Virtual concerts are growing: DJ Marshmello attracted over 10 million viewers in Fortnite in 2019, and ABBA will perform as holograms in London in spring 2022. Madonna and Maluma used holograms at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards. The convergence of music, NFTs, metaverses, and immersive experiences offers artists new ways to connect with fans and bypass traditional label systems.
