NFT Market Reshapes as Museums and Institutions Embrace Digital Art

The Centre Pompidou acquired Sarah Meyohas's Bitchcoin NFTs, including two from 2015, adding to its collection of 18 NFTs by artists like Autoglyph, CryptoPunk, Jill Magid, and Jonas Lund. This marks the first NFT acquisition by a French national museum. The Art Market Report by Art Basel and UBS shows NFT sales in art and collectibles grew from $4.6 million in 2019 to $11.1 billion in 2021, with art-specific sales at $2.6 billion. Christie's launched Christie's 3.0, a fully on-chain marketplace on Ethereum, while Sotheby's launched Metaverse. Only 6% of galleries sold NFTs in 2021, but 74% of high-net-worth collectors bought NFTs. Museums like MAK Vienna, ZKM Karlsruhe, LACMA, and Buffalo AKG Art Museum have acquired NFTs. Ninfa, a Milan-based NFT gallery and platform, launched in June 2022 and now hosts over 600 artists. The Museo Nazionale dell'Arte Digitale (MAD) will open in Milan in 2026, directed by Ilaria Bonacossa. The NFT market is shifting from speculation to curation and institutional validation.
