Newly discovered Chaves Nogales stories reveal pro-Republican stance

publication · 2026-05-27

Eight previously unknown stories by Manuel Chaves Nogales, signed under pseudonyms, have been uncovered by the editor who first 'discovered' the journalist. The texts, decidedly pro-Republican, appeared in the magazine Madrid, an eight-page broadsheet produced in Paris between December 1937 and March 1938. The stories are now published in the collection Guerra total. Episodios de la guerra civil española (Renacimiento, 2026). They depict scenes such as a father losing his young daughter in the rubble of a bombing in Bizkaia, a pilot from the rebel-controlled zone refusing to repeat the feat of Guernica, and a Falangist destroying war material intended for the capture of Madrid. The works reveal a journalist striving to convey to the French population the horror looming over Europe, which had already begun with the partition.
