Newly Discovered Artemisia Gentileschi Portrait on View at Sperone Westwater
A recently uncovered portrait by Artemisia Gentileschi, renowned as the most prominent female old master, is now on view at the Sperone Westwater gallery in New York. This artwork, created in the 1630s, showcases a stylish young nobleman whose identity remains unknown, and it was confirmed as authentic following restoration that unveiled the monogram AG. This exhibition represents the inaugural showcase of pre-modern art within the gallery's Norman Foster-designed space at 257 Bowery. It features around a dozen Italian artworks from the 17th and 18th centuries, curated by London and Milan dealers Robilant & Voena. Gentileschi, celebrated for her striking Baroque depictions of beheading scenes, is also significant in feminist art history due to her involvement in a documented rape trial. The painting will be part of a significant public exhibition in Milan this spring. The exhibition is open until February 19 and includes works by Francesco Guardi and Luca Giordano, alongside contemporary art by Heinz Mack on the lower levels.
