New Zealand Decentralizes Arts Funding to Regional Bodies

institutional · 2026-05-22

Creative New Zealand (CNZ) is shifting its arts funding strategy from a centralized approach to establishing as many as 16 independent regional organizations dedicated to grants and development. According to CEO Gretchen La Roche, artists will submit their applications to these regional entities, while CNZ will manage national organizations and advocacy efforts. This decision comes after a 2023 consultation revealed that the existing system is "broken," with CNZ approving less than 20% of applications. The tender will close on May 29, with partnerships potentially commencing as early as July 2027. La Roche clarified that this initiative is not intended to reduce costs but rather to draw in more investment and address geographic disparities, as only 13 of New Zealand's 16 regions are currently served by regional arts organizations. Challenges include managing conflicts of interest and enhancing capabilities.
