New York's winter streets become open-air art galleries
A series of public art installations across New York City, from Midtown to Brooklyn, offer safe, outdoor cultural experiences during the pandemic. In Midtown, 'Prismatica' by RAW Design, ATOMIC3, DIX au carré, and Jean-François Piché features 25 luminous prisms on Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets, part of the Garment District Art on the Plazas program, running through January. At Kasmin Sculpture Garden on the High Line, three bronze hares by Barry Flanagan are on view until April. On the Bowery, 'Illuminate Covid-19' by Domingo Abrusci, Alexandra Payne, Elisa Forlini, and Robyn Squires visualizes COVID-19 data on a city map, displayed at Spazio Canvas until March 1. The newly opened Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station features 'Go' by Kehinde Wiley, 'The Hive' by Elmgreen & Dragset, and 'Penn Station's Half Century' by Stan Douglas, curated by Public Art Fund. At Central Park's southeast entrance, Sam Moyer's 'Doors for Doris'—three marble, stone, and concrete gates—honors Doris C. Freedman and remains through September. At MoMA, Garrett Bradley's 'America' mixes her films with the 1914 'Lime Kiln Club Field Day,' with a soundtrack by Trevor Mathison and Udit Duseja. In Brooklyn, Heinrich Spillmann's 'Celestial Heroes Banquet' at the Central Library offers wooden seating through March 15, while Davina Semo's five bronze bells, 'Reverberation,' at Brooklyn Bridge Park invite public interaction.
