New York's Statue of Liberty Museum Opens with $100M Renovation

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Statue of Liberty Museum, a new 2,400-square-meter facility on Liberty Island, opened in 2019 as part of a $100 million initiative by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. Designed by FXCollaborative, the museum is separate from the statue itself, featuring a stepped exterior leading to a green roof with native grasses and views of New York Harbor. The exhibition, designed by ESI Design, spans three galleries covering the statue's conception, construction, and symbolism. The first gallery explores its origins as a gift from France to the US, proposed by Édouard de Laboulaye, with abolitionist undertones—broken chains at its feet symbolizing freedom from slavery, though hidden from view. The second gallery focuses on the pedestal, which was a financial challenge; the torch-bearing arm was displayed at Madison Square for six years to raise funds. The third gallery features interactive stations where visitors create their own definitions of liberty, displayed as a collective collage forming the statue's shape. Highlights include the original torch (replaced in 1986) and a life-size replica of the statue's face for tactile exploration. The museum offers audioguides in 13 languages and is free with the ferry ticket, which also includes access to the pedestal and Ellis Island's immigration museum. A separate ticket is required for the crown.
