New York's public art scene shines during Frieze week

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The New York edition of Frieze is accompanied by ambitious public art projects across the city. The High Line, Public Art Fund, and Creative Time are the main players. High Line, curated by Cecilia Alemani, will open a new section called Plinth in 2018 dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. Creative Time features French artist Sophie Calle, who for two days met visitors at Green-Wood Cemetery, collected their secrets on paper, and buried them with tombstones and obelisks she designed; the project will last 25 years. Public Art Fund celebrated its 40th anniversary by bringing Anish Kapoor's liquid vortex, previously seen at Versailles and Galleria Continua in San Gimignano, to Brooklyn Bridge Park, where it is set against the bridges connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan and the Downtown skyscrapers.
