New York's Museum of Broadway to open in November 2022
The Museum of Broadway, a new institution dedicated to the history of Broadway theatre, will open in November 2022 at 145 West 45th Street in Times Square, New York. Conceived by Tony Award-winning producer Julie Boardman, the museum offers an immersive and interactive experience exploring musicals, comedies, and their craftspeople. The project was delayed from its original late-2020 opening due to the pandemic. The museum is backed by private entities including Playbill, The Billy Rose Theatre Division, The Al Hirschfeld Foundation, and Concord Theatrics. The curatorial team is led by Ben West, with members Jennifer Ashley Tepper, Faye Armon-Troncoso, and Michael McDonald. The museum is organized into three sections: a geographical section tracing the development of New York's theatre district from the Financial District to Union Square and Herald Square, finally settling in Times Square by the mid-19th century; a historical section covering the evolution of Broadway shows from The Ziegfeld Follies to The Wiz and Rent, featuring props, costumes, photos, and objects highlighting productions that pushed creative boundaries or challenged social norms; and an interactive backstage section revealing how Broadway shows are made. The museum aims to honor Broadway's history, pioneers, and future.
