New York's Green Spaces: From Central Park to Community Gardens

other · 2026-05-04

New York City, often associated with skyscrapers, is dotted with numerous green spaces. Central Park, opened in 1857 and designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, is the largest urban park, featuring separate circulation paths for pedestrians, horses, and vehicles. It spans 340 hectares with gardens, artificial lakes, waterfalls, 36 bridges, a zoo, two ice rinks, a theater, art spaces, and the Park Drive loop used in the NYC Marathon. Community gardens emerged in 1973 when artist Liz Christy founded the Green Guerillas, cleaning a vacant lot at Bowery and Houston Street. The High Line, a linear park on a former railway, was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with botanical input from Piet Oudolf. Brooklyn Bridge Park, by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, stretches 2.5 km along the waterfront in DUMBO, hosting events like Photoville. Domino Park, a 5-acre public park in Williamsburg designed by James Corner Field Operations, sits on the site of the former Domino Sugar refinery. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, founded in 1910 by botanist Charles Stuart Gager within Prospect Park, includes the Native Flora Garden, Children's Garden, Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden (the first in the US by Takeo Shiota), Rose Garden with 5,000 bushes of 1,400 varieties, Shakespeare Garden, a greenhouse, library, and art gallery. It hosts over 15,000 plant species and attracts more than 900,000 visitors annually.
