New York Public Library Honors Stonewall 50 with Photography Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The New York Public Library is hosting 'Love & Resistance: Stonewall 50,' a major photography exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The show, on view at the library's flagship building on Fifth Avenue, features photographs by Kay Tobin Lahusen and Diana Davies, pioneers of photojournalism who documented the 1969 uprising. The exhibition also includes documents, books, magazines, and cultural artifacts from the library's collection that trace the early LGBTQ+ identity movement. Eric Marcus of the Stonewall 50 committee noted the inspirational nature of the riots, where a marginalized community stood up to police. The Stonewall Inn and Christopher Park were designated a national monument by President Barack Obama, who also protected the surrounding neighborhood. The park features George Segal's 'Gay Liberation Monument,' installed in 1992. The exhibition runs through July 13, 2019, coinciding with World Pride in New York City.
