New York Photography Exhibitions: ICP Reopens, Fotografiska Debuts, MoMA Shows Lange

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The International Center of Photography (ICP) has reopened in a new 3,700-square-meter space in the Lower East Side, designed by Gensler, reuniting its museum and school for the first time. Founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa, ICP now occupies a building attached to a 14-story tower by SHoP Architects. Inaugural exhibitions include 'Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop,' curated by Vikki Tobak and Fab 5 Freddy, featuring contact sheets and iconic photos of Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, and Tupac Shakur; 'I Can Make You Feel Good' by Tyler Mitchell, the first Black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover (Beyoncé, 2018); and 'The Lower East Side: Selections from the ICP Collection' with works by Jacob Riis, Weegee, and Lisette Model. James Coupe's deepfake installation 'Warriors' replaces visitors' faces with characters from the 1979 film. Meanwhile, Fotografiska New York opened in December 2019 in the Flatiron district, occupying a 4,000-square-meter neo-Renaissance building from 1894. Its inaugural shows include 'Devotion! 30 Years of Photographing Women' by Ellen von Unwerth, 'Thinking Like a Mountain' by Helene Schmitz, 'Testaments' by Adi Nes, 'Inheritance' by Tawny Chatmon, and 'Other People's Children' by Anastasia Taylor-Lind, commissioned with Time. At MoMA, 'Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures' runs from February 9 to May 2, 2020, featuring about 100 photographs pairing images with text from Lange's career, including her Depression-era work.
