New York launches Culture Pass granting free museum access to library card holders

New York City's three major public library systems—the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, and Queens Library—have partnered to launch Culture Pass, a program offering free annual admission to 33 cultural institutions for cardholders starting July 16. The initiative targets residents, workers, and students aged 13 and older, providing one free visit per year to each participating museum. Eligible individuals can obtain a free library card by showing ID with proof of residency, then book visits online. The program excludes tourists. Participating institutions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the Guggenheim Museum. Each museum limits free passes to one per month. Culture Pass aims to bridge cultural and economic gaps, as museum admission fees in New York average around $25, which is prohibitive for many. The program complements existing initiatives such as IDNYC, which offers free annual memberships to cultural institutions for all residents including the homeless, and Cool Culture, which provides discounted access for low-income families. American cultural institutions, which receive limited public subsidies, often develop partnerships to offer diverse access options—more affordable for residents, more expensive for tourists.
