New York Galleries Open Fall Season with Major Shows from Chelsea to Brooklyn

exhibition · 2026-05-05

After the summer break, New York's art scene reopens with a dense September of exhibitions continuing through October. Chelsea galleries dominate with monumental installations. At Lehmann Maupin, Brazilian twins Osgemeos present their first solo show, 'Silence of the Music,' transforming the space with oil paintings, drawings, collages, kinetic sculptures, video, and sound. On 24th Street, Gladstone Gallery revisits Matthew Barney's early 1991 works, including films 'Blind Perineum' and 'Radial Drill.' Pace Gallery features interactive installations by Random International. Cheim & Read shows Lynda Benglis's latest series. At 303 Gallery, Hans-Peter Feldmann returns through October 29 with red-nose portraits and paintings of seascapes and female figures hung with transparent fishing line. Hauser & Wirth presents African-American artist Rashid Johnson. The International Print Center hosts 'Black Pulp!', a group show examining black identity in America from 1921 to 2016. In Brooklyn, Pedro Reyes's 'Doomocracy' at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, organized by Creative Time, offers a haunted house experience critiquing societal contradictions during the Clinton vs. Trump election campaign, open weekend evenings through November 9.
