New York Exhibition Confronts Brazil's Authoritarian Era with Artistic Resistance

The Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York hosted the exhibition 'Against, Again: Art Under Attack in Brazil' from February 14 to April 3, 2020. Curated by Tatiane Schilaro and Nathalia Lavigne, this showcase was organized by AnnexB to explore the global surge of authoritarianism affecting Brazil. It emphasized artistic responses to oppression, set against the backdrop of a conservative political movement that culminated in the election of a far-right president in 2018. The exhibition addressed the ensuing threats to politicians, activists, and artists while offering insights into Brazil's historical authoritarian conditions. Featured artists included Sonia Andrade, Cildo Meireles, and many others.
