New York Design Week: Lamps, Lalannes, and Housing Ideas

New York Design Week unfolded across the city, with the Head Hi Lamp Show at The Standard's Boom club drawing a glamorous crowd. Organized by Alexandra Hodkowski and Alvaro Alcocer of a Brooklyn bookshop, the biannual showcase featured one-of-a-kind lamps from around the world via open call, with no major sponsor. At Tefaf on Park Avenue, design gained prominence: works by François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne were displayed after a Lalanne hippopotamus bar sold for $31.4m at Sotheby's. Contemporary pieces like Frida Escobedo's Creek bench sold quickly at Friedman Benda. The Future Perfect presented nightlights from $10, including a Luigi Mangione shrine. Tiwa Select and Pin-Up magazine collaborated on Souvenir, vases by Nifemi Ogunro, Minjae Kim, and Dana Arbib. At Van Alen Institute, a talk by Zara Pfeifer, Brad Isnard, and Daniel Jonas Roche revived interest in architect Herman Jessor, who designed 40,000+ co-op units for working- and middle-class New Yorkers, advocating for public-sector housing and transit reform.
