New York City Donates $50 Million to Revitalize Brooklyn Museum

institutional · 2026-04-27

New York City has pledged $50 million to the Brooklyn Museum for major renovations, announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio. The funds will renovate approximately 3,700 square meters, including galleries on the fourth and fifth floors housing European, decorative, American, and Indigenous art, as well as design collections. The project includes expanding educational and after-school spaces, improving energy efficiency, adding multimedia and interactive displays, and creating a permanent exhibition on Brooklyn's history. Director Anne Pasternak stated the building is "stuck in the nineteenth century" despite the museum's 21st-century programs. The donation follows the museum's pandemic-era layoffs and art sales, and supports its community services like food distribution and mental health programs. The Brooklyn Museum, one of the oldest in the US, originated as a library in the early 19th century and now holds vast collections spanning European, Egyptian, African, Asian, American, Islamic, Pacific, and ancient American art.
