New York Baroque Dance Company Celebrates 50 Years
Founded in 1976 by Catherine Turocy and Ann Jacoby, the New York Baroque Dance Company (NYBDC) has reached its 50th anniversary. The company was instrumental in reviving historical Baroque dance through research, performance, and notation-based reconstruction. Turocy, a Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters and recipient of a BESSIE award, has choreographed major works including Rameau's 'Le Temple de la Gloire' (2017 at UC Berkeley) and Handel's 'Terpsicore' (1983). Key collaborations include Concert Royal, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan, and Opera Lafayette. The company performed at Lincoln Center, Spoleto Festival USA, and internationally in France and Japan. In April 2026, Julia Bengtsson was named co-director. Turocy will stage Monteverdi's 'L'Orfeo' with Ars Lyrica Houston in 2026.
