New York Art Week: 7 Fairs Beyond the Armory Show

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

Despite cancellations of Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Dubai due to Coronavirus, New York's art week proceeds with the Armory Show leading from March 5-8, 2020. The 26th edition at Piers 90 and 94 features 178 exhibitors from 31 countries. For the first time, Pier 90 is dedicated to curated initiatives including Perspectives, Focus, and Platform. Perspectives, curated by Nora Burnett Abrams, explores history through a contemporary lens. Independent New York collaborates with design fair Object & Thing, merging contemporary art and design in a single installation at Spring Studios. Scope New York celebrates its 20th edition at Metropolitan Pavilion with 60 galleries focusing on emerging artists. Volta returns after cancellation last year, now directed by Kamiar Maleki with 58 exhibitors from five continents; it was previously sacrificed to accommodate Armory Show expansion. Art on Paper at Pier 36 presents 95 galleries featuring works on paper, including large-scale installations. Clio Art Fair, self-described as an "anti-fair," offers direct dialogue between artists and collectors, accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin since 2017. SPRING/BREAK Art Show takes over Ralph Lauren's former headquarters on Madison Avenue, exploring the theme "In Excess."
