New York Art Week 2022: Frieze Shrinks, 1-54 Shines, Photography Returns
Spring art week in New York marked a return to a post-pandemic atmosphere, albeit with reduced fairs. The tenth edition of Frieze New York took place at The Shed, featuring 65 exhibitors, a significant decrease from nearly 200 before the pandemic. Noteworthy displays included Latifa Echakhch's solo exhibition, works by Nancy Grossman from the 1960s to 1980s, and Kevin McCoy's NFT Quantum Leap: Primordial Star 3 (2022). Gagosian presented a coffee-tea vending machine by Albert Oehlen, while Cajsa von Zeipel's Post Me, Post You drew attention on Instagram. A.I.R. Gallery's How To Perform an Abortion tackled Supreme Court limitations. The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair returned with 25 galleries in Harlem, and the Photography Show by AIPAD launched in Midtown with 49 galleries. NYCxDESIGN Festival occurred from May 10 to May 20.
