New York Art Week 2019: Armory Show Turns 25 Amid Venue Shake-Up
The Armory Show celebrates its 25th anniversary from March 7–10, 2019, but structural issues at Pier 92 forced exhibitors to relocate to Pier 90, canceling the sister fair Volta. The fair presents 194 galleries from 33 countries, including 59 first-time participants. Highlights include Castelli Gallery's tribute to Robert Morris, Alison Jacques Gallery's Dorothea Tanning show, and Lorcan O'Neill's presentation of Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread, and Kiki Smith. Sections include Insights (32 galleries with pre-2000 works), Presents (young galleries under 10 years), Focus (curated by Lauren Haynes, 29 galleries exploring identity), and Platform (large-scale site-specific works curated by Sally Sant). Italian participation is strong with galleries such as Galleria Continua, kaufmann repetto, Lia Rumma, and Mazzoleni. Independent New York marks its 10th anniversary at Spring Studios, Tribeca, with over 50 exhibitors and 21 newcomers including Ortuzar Projects, Arcadia Missa, and Take Ninagawa. Scope returns to Metropolitan Pavilion for its 19th edition with 60 exhibitors and two awards. Art on Paper at Pier 36 features 100 galleries with works on paper, including special section Flatfiles. Clio Art Fair, an 'anti-fair' for unrepresented artists, includes names like Maurizio Cattelan and Vito Acconci. NADA was canceled months prior and replaced by New York Gallery Open.
