New Renaissance itinerary links Umbria and Tuscany through Piero della Francesca, Donatello, and Bartolomeo della Gatta

Four municipalities—Citerna (Perugia), Sansepolcro, Castiglion Fiorentino, and Monterchi (Arezzo)—have launched a 40-kilometer tourist itinerary called 'Rinascimento in Valtiberina e Valdichiana' that connects Renaissance masterpieces across Umbria and Tuscany. The project is promoted through a dedicated website (www.rinascimentovaltiberinavaldichiana.it) organized by municipality, Renaissance masters, and interest areas (art, landscape, food and wine). In Citerna, the Church of San Francesco houses Donatello's polychrome terracotta sculpture 'Madonna with Child' (1415-1420), discovered in 2001 and attributed in 2005. Castiglion Fiorentino's Pinacoteca displays two works by Bartolomeo della Gatta: 'St. Francis Receives the Stigmata' (1487) and 'St. Michael the Archangel' (c. 1480), while the Collegiate Church of Saints Michael and Julian holds his 'Pala di San Giuliano' (1486). Monterchi's museum exclusively exhibits Piero della Francesca's 'Madonna del Parto' (mid-15th century), originally painted for the church of Momentana, now a cemetery chapel. Sansepolcro's Museo Civico contains Piero della Francesca's 'Resurrection' (1460-1468), 'Polyptych of the Misericordia' (1445-1462), and a detached fresco fragment of 'St. Julian' (1454-1458). The itinerary aims to promote the region's artistic, cultural, and landscape heritage, with a focus on the Renaissance period.
