New Ranma ½ Anime Series Premieres October 2024 on Netflix

other · 2026-04-26

A new anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma ½ was announced on March 26, 2024, via the artist's X profile. The official presentation on July 17 confirmed that original voice actors Kappei Yamaguchi (Ranma), Megumi Hayashibara (female Ranma), and Noriko Hidaka (Akane Tendo) will reprise their roles, unlike the 2022 Urusei Yatsura remake which used a new cast. Animation is handled by Studio Mappa. The series debuts on Nippon Television on October 5, 2024, and will stream internationally on Netflix. Takahashi expressed concern about action scenes, the core of the manga. The original manga ran in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 1987 to March 1996, selling 55 million copies. The story follows Ranma Saotome, who turns into a girl when splashed with cold water, and his fiancée Akane. The original anime aired from April 1989 to September 1992. Takahashi has stated the manga was inspired by a desire to tell a story about an intersex person, drawing from the character Ryūnosuke in Urusei Yatsura. The new series faces high expectations from fans.
