New Publication Explores Centuries of Self-Referential Painting

A new book titled "La peinture dans la peinture" examines how painting has made itself its own subject across centuries. Published by Adam Biro, the work explores this enduring artistic reflexivity. The publication features insights from Pierre Georgel, chief curator of French museums and director of the Picasso Museum since 1986. Anne-Marie Lecoq, a research engineer at the Collège de France and former assistant to André Chastel, also contributes to the volume. Their collaboration presents a historical perspective on this self-referential tendency in art. The book demonstrates that contemporary artists' use of this approach is not unique to modern times. This publication offers a comprehensive look at how artists have engaged with painting as both medium and subject throughout history.
