New Pléiade Edition Reassesses Robert Louis Stevenson's Literary Legacy

publication · 2026-04-23

The Bibliothèque de la Pléiade has released a fresh translation of Robert Louis Stevenson's literary works. The inaugural volume, titled Œuvres I, features renowned pieces such as Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, alongside new translations and comprehensive annotations. Edited by Charles Ballarin, with input from Laurent Bury, Patrick Hersant, Marc Porée, and Marc Rolland, this edition seeks to elevate Stevenson's status as a significant literary figure. Nevertheless, Michel Le Bris has criticized the Pléiade for rebranding previously released content as new. The annotations also emphasize Stevenson's critique of realism. His writings have left a mark on authors like Henry James and Jorge Luis Borges, coinciding with a resurgence of interest in Stevenson, referred to as Tusitala in Samoa.
