New Museum of Antiquities to Open in Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli in 2027
A new Museum of Antiquities will open in 2027 in Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli, housed within the Camposanto Monumentale and adjacent spaces. The museum spans over 3,700 square meters (3,200 inside the Camposanto and 550 newly built). It will display Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, and Roman artifacts, focusing on their reuse and reinterpretation across centuries. The project is designed by Florence-based studio Guicciardini & Magni Architetti, under the scientific direction of art historian Salvatore Settis. Settis emphasizes a narrative centered on the long life of objects and their reemployment, reflecting Pisa's medieval identity as a maritime republic and a crossroads of cultures. Existing sarcophagi in the Camposanto will remain in place, integrated into the new layout. Andrea Maestrelli, President of the Opera della Primaziale, calls the museum a gesture of cultural and civic restitution. The design includes a veiled skylight that reveals atmospheric conditions, linking the experience to the site's historic walls.
