New Museum Leadership Transforms Lower East Side Arts District Ahead of Bowery Opening

institutional · 2026-04-20

Lisa Phillips and Richard Flood are the director and chief curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and they're shaking up New York's art scene. Their new building, crafted by the Japanese architecture firm Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAAT, is set to debut on December 1. Even before it opens, the museum is helping to develop an arts district in the Lower East Side, attracting new spaces like Salon 94 and Lehmann Maupin. The curatorial team, including Massimiliano Gioni, has planned exhibitions featuring artists Tomma Abts and Rivane Neuenschwander. Plus, they've teamed up with the MCA Chicago and Hammer Museum in Los Angeles to commission and acquire new video works from Patty Chang, Fiona Tan, and Aernout Mik.
