New Museum announces $63 million expansion with OMA-designed building on Lower East Side

architecture-design · 2026-04-20

The New Museum is planning a major expansion costing $63 million that will add 62,000 square feet to its exhibition space. Designed by OMA's Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu, in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, this new section will honor trustee Toby Devan Lewis, thanks to his $20 million donation—the largest ever received by the museum. Groundbreaking is expected in 2020, with an opening slated for 2022, though the museum will stay open during most of the work. The addition will feature a unique façade of laminated glass and mesh, alongside expanded galleries, NEW INC, a restaurant, a bookstore, a public plaza, artist-residence studios, and community spaces. Board president James Keith Brown made the announcement, and the project will be adjacent to the museum's existing Lower East Side location, which debuted in 2007.
