New Murals in Milan's Barona District Honor Women Partisans and Global Activists

In Milan's Barona district, new murals have replaced deteriorated ones in Piazzale Donne Partigiane, celebrating women of the Resistance and contemporary activists. The main facade depicts Angela Davis, Marielle Franco, and Asia Ramazan Autar, created by writers Luna, Dada, and Chiara Loca. Another facade features Gina Galeotti, a Milanese partisan killed by German soldiers while eight months pregnant, painted by street artist Frode. The lettering "Bella ciao" by ViperHize forms the base of the three female faces, with Davis's victory sign at the top of the ten-meter-high mural. Six years ago, the tribute was to a woman who became a symbol of the Italian Republic's birth on June 2, 1946, photographed on Corriere della Sera. Now, the artists broaden the struggle for human rights with contemporary international icons. Chiara Loca, who portrayed Davis, emphasized the historical and political value of the work, noting that the graffiti and street art world has been male-dominated but women can tackle large walls and scaffolding. The project involved Municipio 6, the association Non una di Meno, Anpi Milano, and Comunità Nuova/Barrio's.
