New multisensory exhibition 'Maria Lai. Fame d’Infinito' opens at Stazione dell’Arte in Ulassai
The Stazione dell’Arte in Ulassai has inaugurated a new permanent exhibition titled 'Maria Lai. Fame d’Infinito', dedicated to the Sardinian artist Maria Lai (1919–2013). The museum, founded in 2006 inside the former Jerzu railway station, houses a large donation of Lai's works. The new layout, organized chronologically and thematically, emphasizes physical and intellectual accessibility through tactile reproductions, bilingual didactic panels, and an interactive multimedia archive. Director Davide Mariani stated that the exhibition allows visitors to experience Lai's work through multiple senses—visual, auditory, and tactile—and marks a new phase for the museum, which will also host temporary shows and site-specific projects by other artists. The title 'Fame d’Infinito' reflects Lai's inspiration from Sardinia, her hometown Ulassai, and themes of humanity, nature, microcosm, and macrocosm. The multisensory approach was developed in collaboration with the Fondazione Stazione dell’arte, the Comune di Ulassai, the Istituto Regionale Sardegna Ricerche, and the Museo Statale Tattile Omero of Ancona. The archive includes interviews and documentaries by filmmaker Francesco Casu, as well as works from the open-air museum 'Maria Lai' such as 'Il Lavatoio' (1982–1989), 'La strada del rito' (1992), and 'Fiabe intrecciate. Omaggio a Gramsci' (2007).
