New Mitoraj Museum in Pietrasanta to Open by End of 2024

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The new Museo Mitoraj in Pietrasanta, dedicated to the late sculptor Igor Mitoraj, is set to open by the end of 2024. Architect Frank Michael Boehm was appointed director on August 27, 2024. The museum is housed in a former covered market, renovated by OBR studio (founded by Paolo Brescia and Tommaso Principi in 2000). The project includes a public square-garden already opened by the municipality, featuring donated works like 'Corazza'. The interior features a free plan with mushroom-shaped columns, allowing flexibility. The lower level will host a café, temporary exhibition space, and community areas. The exhibition design is a collaboration between OBR and Jean-Paul Sabatié, president of the Fondazione Mitoraj. Brescia emphasizes the project's 'super public' nature and its role in urban regeneration. Other OBR projects include Casa Vela in Genoa (a hub for the Italian Sailing Federation, with groundbreaking on September 9, 2024) and Casa BFF in Milan (a bank building with a public gallery, to be completed by January 2025).
