New lighting reveals Michelangelo's Moses in restored splendor

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

Michelangelo's Tomb of Julius II, including the famous Moses sculpture, has been restored and fitted with a new LED lighting system at the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. The restoration, supervised by the Soprintendenza per il Colosseo e l'area archeologica centrale di Roma, was funded by the Gioco del Lotto. The lighting project, designed by Mario Nanni in collaboration with restorer Antonio Forcellino, uses innovative computer techniques and Viabizzuno LED lamps to reproduce the natural Roman light that Michelangelo originally considered when carving the marble. The intervention comes 15 years after the last maintenance work on the site, which attracts millions of visitors annually. The new illumination reveals the original colors of Carrara marble and fine details of the sculpture, restoring the monument's 16th-century appearance. Nanni studied the natural light entering the church from east and west windows at different times of day to design the electronic light sources. The Gioco del Lotto plans further activities to promote the monument to the public.
