New LED lighting system debuts at Roman Forum for Rome's birthday

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

The Roman Forum will unveil a new LED lighting system on April 21, Rome's birthday, designed by Acea. The installation involved 3,800 hours of work, 6,000 meters of cable, and 450 light points ranging from 7 to 80 watts, reducing energy consumption by about 60% compared to previous lighting. The investment was approximately €400,000, according to Superintendent Francesco Prosperetti. The new lighting enhances key monuments along a 75-minute guided route available every Friday by reservation, including the Basilica Emilia, Basilica Giulia, Portico of the Dei Consenti, the recently opened church of Santa Maria Antiqua, Via Sacra, Arch of Titus, Temple of Castor and Pollux, Arch of Septimius Severus, and the Column of Phocas. Prosperetti, appointed by Minister Dario Franceschini and strongly supported by former mayor Ignazio Marino, has been revitalizing the archaeological site. The lighting design features a soft white for the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, while the church of San Lorenzo in Miranda is illuminated with a warm golden light, exemplifying the new approach.
