New LED lighting enhances Piero della Francesca's frescoes in Arezzo

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

On October 7, the Polo Museale della Toscana and iGuzzini unveiled a new lighting system for Piero della Francesca's fresco cycle the Legend of the True Cross in the Cappella Bacci of the Basilica di San Francesco in Arezzo. The LED installation, designed by architect Antonio Stevan in collaboration with the basilica's director Rossella Sileno, reduces energy consumption by 80% and minimizes visual impact. The system uses DALI drivers and remote control for adjustable lighting scenarios. Stefano Casciu, director of the Polo museale della Toscana, praised the intervention for enhancing the 'paintings of light' and thanked iGuzzini for their sponsorship. The frescoes, painted between 1453 and 1459, depict stories from the Golden Legend by Jacopo da Varagine and are considered Renaissance masterpieces. The restoration of the frescoes, one of the most advanced in Italy, was completed in 2000 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
