New Kunsthalle Mannheim by GMP Architects to Open in 2017
The new Kunsthalle Mannheim building, designed by German firm von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (GMP), won an international competition with 29 participants. The nearly 13,800 sqm structure will significantly expand exhibition space for modern and contemporary art. Organized into seven distinct blocks around a 700 sqm central atrium with a glass roof, the building functions as an autonomous public space. Its flexible volumes, accessible via bridges, walkways, and terraces, pay homage to Mannheim's Baroque urban layout. The opening is expected by the end of 2017.
