New Installation of Flemish and Savoy Collections at Galleria Sabauda, Turin

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Musei Reali di Torino have inaugurated a new installation of the Galleria Sabauda's second floor, focusing on the collection of Prince Eugenio di Savoia Soissons and Flemish and Dutch painting, one of the most important in Italy. Opening to the public on May 11, 2024, the rehang presents over 180 works, including pieces long held in reserve, displayed on multiple registers on walls, between windows, and along the central corridor. Curators Annamaria Bava and Sofia Villano state the arrangement continues the museographic choices previously adopted on the same floor. The design is by Loredana Iacopino architettura. Highlights include Jan van Eyck's panel 'The Stigmata of Saint Francis', two panels by Rogier van der Weyden ('A Devotee in Prayer' and 'The Visitation', whose central panel is at the Louvre), and Hans Memling's 'Scenes of the Passion of Christ'. The rooms dedicated to Prince Eugenio di Savoia Soissons (Paris, 1663 – Vienna, 1736), a Habsburg commander and refined intellectual, showcase his extraordinary collection featuring masters of 17th-century classicism such as Nicolas Poussin, Guido Reni, and Francesco Albani, as well as Flemish and Dutch works by Antoon van Dyck, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Paul Bril, Gerrit Dou, Jan Griffier, Paulus Potter, and David Teniers.
