New independent art space Piano Alto opens in Naples' Miano district
Artist Nicholas Tolosa (Eboli, 1981) has founded Piano Alto, a new independent space in the northern periphery of Naples, in the Miano district. The area, historically industrial and home to the former Peroni brewery complex, is undergoing urban renewal partly due to a new metro station. Piano Alto positions itself as a workspace, experimentation hub, and open venue for projects exploring the relationship between art and urban context. It features a large terrace overlooking the city, intended as an extension of the exhibition area, under the artistic direction of critic Roberto Sottile. Tolosa stated the project stems from the need for a real, shared space independent of institutional contexts, serving as a daily workplace for confrontation and openness. Sottile, also director of the Polo Culturale of Rende (Cosenza), described Piano Alto as a new curatorial challenge and a platform for dialogue between Tolosa's art and the art system, maintaining a free, critical, and radical position. The exhibition program aims to activate dialogue between works, space, and the public, leaving a mark on the urban context. A collaboration with the MAV – Museo Archeologico Virtuale di Ercolano will orient the program toward experiments with new technologies.
