New Graphic Novel Explores Mark Rothko's Life and Art
Francesco Matteuzzi and Giovanni Scarduelli have released a graphic novel titled "Mark Rothko. Il miracolo della pittura" (Centauria, 2020), which explores the life and work of the abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. The 128-page book uses a narrative device where Rothko dialogues with his childhood self, focusing on key moments such as his early surrealist experiments, the Harvard Murals, and the Houston Chapel. The authors deliberately omit the artist's suicide, ending instead on a metaphorical note. Matteuzzi and Scarduelli provide commentary on their approach, with Scarduelli emphasizing that Rothko's art requires direct experience and cannot be fully mediated through reproductions. The book is published by Centauria and is available for purchase.
