New Frida Kahlo Documentary 'Frida. Viva La Vida' Trailer Released

publication · 2026-05-04

A new documentary on Frida Kahlo, produced by Ballandi Arts and Nexo Digital in collaboration with Sky Arte, will premiere at the 37th Torino Film Festival and hit Italian cinemas on November 25, 26, and 27, 2019. Directed by Giovanni Troilo and featuring Asia Argento, the film is structured in six chapters exploring Kahlo's life and work in Mexico, blending exclusive interviews, archival documents, dramatic reconstructions, and her most famous self-portraits (including the 1931 portrait with Diego Rivera, The Two Fridas from 1939, The Broken Column from 1944, and The Wounded Deer from 1946). The documentary highlights two sides of Kahlo: the feminist icon and the free artist constrained by a broken body. For the first time, photographs, clothing, and personal objects from the Frida Kahlo Museum archives—normally inaccessible to the public—will be shown, along with original prints of Graciela Iturbide's photographs taken during the opening of Frida's bathroom in 2004.
