New European Bauhaus: Ursula von der Leyen's Green Cultural Revolution
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced the New European Bauhaus initiative in October 2020, aiming to link the European Green Deal with cultural and creative sectors. The project, discussed at Triennale Milano in December 2020, seeks to create a sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful future through interdisciplinary collaboration among designers, scientists, architects, artists, and citizens. The first phase (until summer 2021) includes the launch of a website and the New European Bauhaus prize for best practices in sustainability, social inclusion, and community. The second phase (from September 2021) will implement pilot projects, and the third phase (from January 2023) focuses on dissemination. Commissioners Mariya Gabriel and Elisa Ferreira emphasized the initiative's role in bridging art, culture, science, and technology to drive systemic change. The New European Bauhaus is a 'think-do tank' supporting the EU's goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
